AGCO Tractors

AGCO is a highly consolidated agricultural equipment company based in Duluth, Georgia, that has a plethora of brand names in its lineup – Massey Ferguson tractors, Challenger tractors and combines, Gleaner combines, Heston hay equipment, White planters, New Idea hay and forage equipment, SpraCoupe sprayers, RoGator applicators, TerraGator applicators, Sunflower tillers, and Valtra and Fendt tractors outside the U.S. In 2007, they recorded $6.8 billion in sales worldwide.

For a time, the Allis name was also in their stable. Between the merger in 1990 and 2009, AGCO sold tractors with under the AGCO-Allis brand. In ’09, the company announced they were phasing out the brand everywhere but South America. Their main tractor offerings would be through the Massey Ferguson and Challenger brands.

Between 1970 and today, there have been several distinctive tractor models.

  • The last “Allis-Chalmers” tractors were produced in the mid-80s before the agricultural recession forced a series of mergers and acquisitions. One of the final A-C tractors was the Model 4W-305 of 1985. It had a twin-turbo engine that produced up to 305 HP and included a transmission that had 20 forward gears and 4 in reverse.
  • In the 70s – when Massey Ferguson was still an independent company – they introduced the 1505 and 1805 models powered by a 174 HP Caterpillar V8 diesel engine.
  • In the 80s, Massey Ferguson brought out the 3000 Series with a turbo-diesel, six-cylinder 190 HP engine. This was one of the first series to make extensive use of electronics. Other series included the MF 398, the MF 699, the 2685, and the 2005 Series.
  • The current Massey Ferguson offerings include tractors from 22.5 to 275 HP, as well as conventional combine harvesters, rotary combines and loaders. Some of the tractors in the range feature Perkins diesel engines.
  • After the AGCO merger, the company produced “AGCO Allis” branded tractors in the 5600, 6670, 8700 and 9700 Series. The 5600 Series were mid-sized models ranging from 45 to 63 HP. The 6670 model was a specific row crop model with 63 HP. The 8700 Series were large capacity models that produce between 70 and 85 HP and were available in two- and four-wheel drive. The two turbo-charged 9600 models varied from 175 to a 195 HP.
  • In 2002, AGCO acquired the Challenger line of farm tractors from the Caterpillar Company, and Challenger tractors are marketed through Caterpillar dealerships. The line includes both track and conventionally tired tractors. All feature Caterpillar engines. They range in size from the MT 600 C with 206 HP to the MT 900 C with 585 HP.
  • AGCO also distributes in the U.S. Italian manufacturer Landini tractors. In the 2000s, the Landini line included 50 models ranging from 43 to 123 HP.
