NebraskaLand Rising Star Award

NebraskaLand Rising Star AwardThe NEBRASKALand Foundation selected the Wessels Living History Farm for the 2010 Rising Star Award. The award is given to new or expanding attractions, public or private, that have made a significant addition to the overall tourism effort of the local area, the region, and the state.

The Foundation was organized in 1962 under the leadership of then-Governor Frank Morrison. Their activities include a number of programs for Nebraska youth, annual birthday bashes held to celebrate Nebraska Statehood Day, brochures with facts and highlights for the state, and the Rising Star Award.

Past award winners include the Union Pacific Golden Spike visitors center at North Platte, the massive new domes at Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, the Homestead National Monument outside Beatrice, Chadron’s Mari Sandoz Museum and others. What makes the Wessels Living History Farm unique, according to education coordinator Dale Clark, is that, “We’re the only museum in whole area that concentrates on the story of agriculture from the 1920s and 30s on.”

Unlike museums like county historical societies, Wessels is not supported in any way by tax dollars. So, local and national support from individuals and companies involved in agriculture is critical for the future.

Underwriting for the Wessels Living History Farm has also been provided by these Silver Donors:

  • Dale and Joan Clark
  • Don R. Freeman
  • C. G. (Kelly) & Virginia Holthus
  • Conner Roofing Company, Inc.
  • Greg and Kris Holoch
  • Boyd and Elaine Stuhr
  • The 1920s section of this site was developed by the Interactive Media Unit of Nebraska Educational Telecommunications.
  • The 1930s, 1940s, 1950s-60s and 70s to Today sections were developed by The Ganzel Group Communications of Lincoln, Nebraska.
