Gordon Schmidt: "I remember the day very well. I got into the car to go to school. I went to town school all the time. And the driver said, 'We are at war.' And I couldn't believe what had happened. 'Cause the only access to news I had was the Weekly Reader. I didn't believe that, I didn't know it."
John Steingard: "Well, that was Sunday night, late Sunday night. We were in a cafe. And one of the old gents said, 'One thing for sure, tomorrow morning it'll be open season on the Japs.' I didn't know what was going on. I was probably 16 years old, 15. I didn't know we had any problem with the Japs."
