"I was stationed down in Del Rio, Texas, going through school to go back overseas again in another bomber unit. V-E Day, we were right out in the middle of the sagebrush part of Texas, and there was nothing to do to celebrate. So, it just kind of came and was gone. But they stopped our training. We didn't go on. Subsequently, we didn't go overseas again, which we were in the pipeline to do when that happened."

Jim Chenault was born in California. But his mother had grown up around York, Nebraska, and Jim always felt a tie to his rural roots. During World War II, Jim enlisted in the Army Air Corps and flew 32 dangerous bomber missions over Germany in 2½ months. After the war, he returned to York and became a civilian flight instructor and crop duster. Then, he went back in the Air Force in time to fly hundreds of missions in the Berlin Air Lift. Jim then went into farming back in Nebraska and still manages his farm.
