"The work we were doing depended entirely on the farmer. The work in our place depended 95, 98 percent on the farmer.
"In Gresham, the local businessmen to try to promote business in town, they would have free dances one evening a week. And, of course, the businessmen furnished the music, whatever it took to do it. They'd also have free movies. Those were promotional ideas for a small town.
"The movies in the summertime were shown outside. They had a big screen up. In the summertime, every small town around had to have a free movie. If any small town didn't have it, why they'd all point at 'em. 'They don't even have a free movie.' [Laughter.]"
