"I remember one time, my God, we went to town. They always set the can of cream and the eggs together in the back of the car. And one time, we upset the damn cream.
"Excuse my English! I forget I'm on this. Cut that out. [Laugh.]
"Anyway, we upset the can of cream, and so there went our money for gas and groceries. So we had to do without."
Question: "Listen, that's worth a 'damn.'"
"[Laughs.] It was unreal. God, I tell you. That was our money for the week, to buy the groceries and gas for the car and whatever else we needed if we couldn't stretch it that far."

Mildred Opitz grew up in Seward County, Nebraska. She and her husband Chris were married in 1929 and they had two children. She remembers farming with horses and has experienced all of the major innovations in agriculture that have happened since. And, as she says, she still enjoys dancing more than almost anything else in the world.
