"But, I remember watermelon time. We'd go out and steal watermelon. And this one group of people, they raised the best darn watermelons. And we went out there one night, and we had a, I think it was Model T or something like that with a back end – a coupe or something like – and we got it full of watermelons. And, oh my Lord, I tell you. We had watermelons going out of our ears that night."

Mildred Opitz grew up in Seward County, Nebraska. She and her husband Chris were married in 1929 and they had two children. She remembers farming with horses and has experienced all of the major innovations in agriculture that have happened since. And, as she says, she still enjoys dancing more than almost anything else in the world.
