"The population thrives in dry climates. When you have moisture, a good rainfall, there are certain diseases that get involved in the grasshoppers. I'm not sure what this is, but I know that it's true in corn borers. There's a fungus that develops in years when you have good rainfall that destroys the insects."

Stanley Jensen grew up on an isolated farmstead in South Dakota. He says the farm was on a dirt road two miles from a gravel road and 15 miles from the nearest paved road. He graduated from high school and immediately signed up to serve in World War II. After the war, Stan took advantage of the GI Bill and earned a PhD degree from Iowa State in plant breeding. He completed a 40-year career with Pioneer Hi-Bred Seeds in York, Nebraska, and has several patents for new varieties of hybrid corn. He and his wife Margaret have three children.
