"No, it was terrible. I know, when I started farming I sowed [planted] alfalfa south of the house a ways, and plowed the ground nice and smooth, you know. And my wife had just cleaned house. And a hell of a dust storm come up, and you should have seen our house. It just made her sick, you know. It even blew seed out of the ground. Of course, you didn't plant it very deep, you know. In the yard, then, there was little alfalfa come up all over. [Laughs.]"

Elroy Hoffman grew up on a farm near York. He went to a rural school and started high school in York. But he came down with scarlet fever and had to be quarantined. Shortly after, his father also came up ill and Elroy had to leave school to work on the home place and as a hired man on other farms. For a time, he worked for the brothers of David Wessels. He and his wife Florence had two children. Elroy died in 2005.
