"I didn't get married until I was 25 years old. I'd have got married a lot sooner if we'd have had the money. But, hell, I didn't know how we was going to make a living, you know. And now I'm wondering how we did live. But, we did. Never went hungry, neither."
Question: "Do you remember not having enough money?"
"We got married in '39, and our daughter was born in '41 in May. And when my wife was to go home from the hospital, she give me a list of stuff she needed for the baby. I didn't have a damn cent to pay for it. But, Jorgensen in Stromsburg was good. They charged it to me. And, of course, eventually, I paid it."
