"Yeah, they were selling the horses. There was nothing to feed them. And so, the tractors was coming in and they was making - in '34 and '5 they was starting to make pretty good farm tractors that you could put a cultivator on. And John Deere put on a good cultivator on their tractors. You know how tractors go. One fellow will buy a tractor, then it just kind of builds up from there and it just keeps going. But in '34 - '34, '5 and '6 - I think there was probably more tractors sold probably than any one time."

LeRoy Hankel was raised on a farm and spoke German in the home. He only learned English after he went to school. He started farming for himself in 1937 renting ground for years until he could buy his own land in 1948. That was also the first year they had indoor plumbing. He and his wife Blondina had five children. Later, LeRoy served as an assessor for York county for 13 years. LeRoy passed on in 2005.
