Herman Goertzen says he has lived his whole life on farms near Henderson, Nebraska. He grew up on a farm and went to school in a one-room rural school. Later he married and started his own farm. He and his wife had four children. He was one of the early groundwater irrigators in the state and served on the local co-op board. He has remained very active in the Mennonite Church.
"Everybody in the district, in that school district came together for the picnic. I mean, the ones that had kids in school came together, and we had our softball games and tag and games that we played, food and ice cream. "
