"Everything dried up. The fields were, he [John] said, 'The dust! That's when you had the dust bowl.' And he said, 'You couldn't keep anything out on the pastures out in the fields because it was all, all gone.' So they just sold out. And he said that the railroad come in there and was loading up their cattle. And he said everybody rushed to sell. And they were shipped out of there on railroad cars."

Birdie Farr grew up in one of the few African American families in Bethany, a working class suburb of Lincoln during the 1920s. Her brothers were well-known football players for Northeast High School. She married John Farr in 1946 and moved to York. John worked for a local auto dealership until he started his own repair shop. The business was successful and the family became leaders of the community.
