About Clyde Ehlers
One of the early subjects and supporters of the Wessels Farm and Web site, Clyde Ehlers of Waco, died in 2011 at the age of 87. We wanted to bring together and link to all of the video segments that he contributed to on this page.
Clyde was the only child of George and Mable (Hottinger) Ehlers. He was born on May 31, 1924, near Thayer. His mother Mable died when he was eight years old and Clyde was raised by his father and grandmothers. Clyde was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Thayer where, in later life, he served in various church offices. He was an outstanding athlete and lifelong sports fan. As soon as he could he started farming, and he lived 87 years on the same section of land. After retirement, he helped his grandson Chris Ziegler get started in farming.
In the first video linked here Clyde and Chris talk about how farming has changed in the last century.
On Dec. 27, 1946, Clyde was married to Norma Heineke at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Gresham. They had two daughters, Amy and Sue. Amy married Woody Ziegler and Sue married Gary Sullivan – all them still live near Waco. He is also survived by former daughter-in-law Sharon and her husband Jerry Sykes of Ceresco. Clyde’s grandchildren include: Erin and her husband Jeff Huebschman, Chris and his wife Vicky Ziegler, Clay and his wife Julianna Ehlers, Andrea and her husband Trent Chrisman, Josh Sullivan, Mackenzie Sullivan, Amanda Sykes, Klifton Keefer, Whitney Mason, Ashley and her husband Alec Toillion, James and his wife Kim Sykes and Jerilyn Sykes. He is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren whom he loved and adored. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Bradley. Norma still lives near Waco.
Clyde and Norma also hosted foreign exchange students. Clyde served on the NRD Board and on the Weather Modification Board. He loved playing pitch and going fishing with his friends.
